As David says: The law of the jungle is not "eat OR get eaten" - it's "eat AND get eaten". These little plants do what many others also try: They protect their tastiest, youngest parts. The dark colour comes from poison against what or who ever wants to eat them, in open areas it's also often for sun protection. |
