Leafy Seadragon

Leafy Seadragon in Melbourne Aquarium

A fish that can't possibly look stranger: the Leafy Seadragon, a relative of Seahorses. One should think such a fish cannot move, but that's a mistake. They can, and surprisingly quick, but not with what you see on this picture. All the greenish appendages are just that, nothing more. The fins are clear and nearly invisible. They are constantly propelling so it looks like a lump of motionless seaweed or kelp was drifting along while in fact the fish moves as free as any other animal. It is certainly not easy to spot them in the ocean, but the Aquarium makes it a lot easier... ;-)
