The amount of termites in the tropics is impressive. Not only their headcount, also the amount of different types and life styles. Quite well-known are the ones living in large moulds in and above the ground. I also knew of the ones living in large nests next the stems and branches of trees. But in the Centre I first came across a type living amongst the leaves of the trees. This one's a ghost gum next Ormiston gorge. The termite nests are of the size of a big apple. This one's the rather impressive type: the solid, old termite mould sitting on and in the ground. It goes fairly deep into the ground and contains a pretty perfect ventilation system so the temperature inside is quite stable. |
