King Billy Pine, Athrotaxis selaginoides

King Billy Pine

The King Billy Pine is a tree I seldom found in Tasmania. It can grow up to 30 metres height and the trunk may get a diameter of 1,5 m. It is a close relative of the Pencil Pine, but like this one, no pine at all. And like the Pencil Pine, it nowadays suffers from bush fires and the side effects of logging. The ones photograped were found in Hartz NP near lake Osborne.

The tree, which is endemic to Tasmania, was named after the last full-blooded Tasmanian Aborigene William Lanne, called King Billy.
